Music99: The Complete UK Guide

If you love discovering new music and connecting with a community of listeners, you might have come across Music99. But what exactly is it? Is it a radio station, a streaming app, or something else entirely?

This guide explains everything UK users need to know about Music99: what it is, how it works, its key features, safety considerations, and what other options are available.

What Is Music99?

Music99 is a free media app that combines an international radio station with a social community. It is not a traditional streaming service like Spotify or Apple Music. Instead, it offers a curated radio experience, broadcasting a mix of international music across multiple genres. Think of it as an always-on radio station with a global playlist, accessible through a dedicated app.

The app is developed by Multimedia Jamaica Ltd (also known as The Gleaner Company Limited) and is available for both Android and iOS devices.

The Music99 Radio Community

A central part of the Music99 experience is its community. The app is designed to make you “a part of the Music 99 Radio community.” It goes beyond just listening by integrating social features that allow you to interact with the station and other listeners.

Key Features of the Music99 App

Music99 offers several features that make it stand out from a standard radio app.

1. Live Audio Streaming and Podcasts

You can listen to audio livestreams of the radio station. Beyond live broadcasts, the app includes recorded shows (essentially podcasts). A key benefit is that you can download these shows to listen to them offline without using any data.

2. A Diverse Music Selection

The station plays “international music of all genres.” The playlist spans from the 1950s to the present day, including adult contemporary, soft rock, pop, country, and reggae.

3. Integrated Social Media

The app is deeply integrated with social media. It provides access to the broadcaster’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and website posts, all within the app itself.

4. Interactive Features

Music99 encourages listener participation through several tools:

• Radio Reporter: You can send pictures, audio, text, and video directly from your phone to the broadcaster.
• Notifications: You can receive alerts about news, programs, contests, and sports results.
• Flash Polls: You can answer questions and participate in polls the radio station addresses to the community.

How to Use Music99

Getting started with Music99 is simple.

Downloading the App

The Music99 app is free to download from official app stores.

• For Android: Available on the Google Play Store.
• For iOS: Available on the Apple App Store.

Using the App

Once installed, you can open the app and start listening to the livestream immediately. You can browse the catalogue of recorded shows and download them for offline listening. The interactive features, such as polls and the radio reporter, are easily accessible from the app’s interface.

Safety and Privacy Considerations

Before downloading any app, it is important to consider how your data is handled.

Data Collection and Sharing

The Music99 app collects and may share data with third parties. The types of data collected include app activity, app performance information, and device or other IDs.

Data Security

The app’s data safety practices have raised some concerns. According to the Google Play listing, data collected by the app is not encrypted and cannot be deleted. This means that once data is collected, it might be difficult to remove. For users concerned about their digital footprint, this is a significant point to consider.
